Flat Head (Flattop) Tower Crane:
Jib Design: The distinguishing feature of a flat head tower crane
is its horizontal jib, which remains parallel to the ground
throughout its operating range. The jib is essentially flat and does not change its angle relative
to the ground.
Advantages: These cranes offer a larger working radius, making them
ideal for construction sites with ample space. They can cover a broader area and are simpler in operation and
maintenance since the jib doesn’t need to luff (move up and down).
Disadvantages: Because of their fixed jib angle, they can have a
larger footprint and may not be suitable for construction sites
with limited space or those close to existing structures where
swing clearance is a concern.
Luffing Head (Luffing Jib) Tower Crane:
Jib Design: The jib on a luffing head tower crane can be raised and
lowered, changing its angle relative to the horizontal plane. When fully raised, it appears almost perpendicular to the ground.
Advantages: Luffing jib cranes are better suited for congested
urban environments and high-rise constructions. Their jibs can be "luffed" (angled) up when not in use or when
moving heavy loads up and down the building, reducing the swing
radius and minimizing obstruction to surrounding areas.
Disadvantages: They tend to have a smaller working radius compared
to flat head cranes and are generally more complex and expensive
due to the mechanism required for luffing the jib.
